My Bio

MATERIAL AND METHODS. Cost increases were seen in the last three years despite the stabilization of antibiotic antibiotics bacterial pneumonia use. Data were taken from the Pharmacy Department's tetracycline unidose registry. Antibiotics are widely used in geriatric centers, but often their use is not optimal. Because codeine and tramadol are prodrugs, inhibition of their metabolism can lead to a tetracycline diminution of their analgesic effects. Certain medications used in dentistry can act as substrates, inducers or inhibitors of this system. Advanced age, antibiotics kill viruses together with immune antibiotic system changes, malnutrition, chronic disease, and the institutional environment, all contribute to a higher risk of acquiring infection in the elderly. The hepatic and intestinal cytochrome, or CY, P450 enzyme system is responsible for the biotransformation of a multitude of antibiotics and urinary tract infections drugs. A progressive antibiotic increase in overall antibiotic consumption was observed during the first 5 years of the study with subsequent stabilization. We determined the most frequently used antibiotics, the hospital units with highest consumption, the variation in these factors over time, and related costs. Likewise, quinolone antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) inhibit the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates. Amoxicillin-clavulanate, tetracyclin ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin were the most extensively used antibiotics. Clinical Implications. While inducers of acetaminophen metabolism, including alcohol, theoretically can increase the proportion of it that is biotransformed into a potentially hepatotoxic metabolite, recent research suggests that concomitant alcohol tetracyclin intake does not increase the hepatotoxic potential of therapeutic doses of acetaminophen. Drug interactions in dentistry. The importance of knowing your CYPs.BACKGROUND. The units showing highest consumption were the Moderate and Highly-Dependent Chronic Unit, the Palliative Care Unit and the Convalescence and Rehabilitation Unit, with significant increases in the Palliative Care Unit in the last two years of the study. Study carried out during the period 1992-1999 in Centro Sociosanitario Albada (Sabadell, Spain). A number of clinically significant drug interactions can arise with dental therapeutic agents that act as substrates or inhibitors of the CYP450 system. Evolution of the use of antibiotics in a hospital long-term care center in CataloniaINTRODUCTION. We observed a change in the consumption and profile of the antimicrobial agents used in our setting, probably related to changes in the population, increases in parenteral treatment and changes in the criteria for treatment of terminal patients. The antibiotics erythromycin and clarithromycin are potent inhibitors of CYP3A4 and can increase blood levels and toxicity of CYP3A4 substrates. Ensuring that patients' medical histories are up to date and acquiring knowledge of the various substrates, inducers and inhibitors of the CYP450 system will help practitioners avoid potentially serious adverse drug interactions.. The establishment of controls for antibiotic use in long-term care centers would lead to improvements in the quality of the care provided. Other dental therapeutic agents are substrates for CYP2C9 (celecoxib, ibuprofen and naproxen), CYP2D6 (codeine and tramadol), CYP3A4 (methylprednisolone) and CYP2E1 (acetaminophen). As polypharmacy continues to increase, the likelihood of adverse drug interactions in dentistry will increase as well.
